What's the difference between a soft, medium, and/or hard alto sax reed?

3 reeds are harder to play with and you need to be a more advanced saxist to play with them. They generally last longer and sound better once you get used to them, but they require more work to make the sound you're looking for. Eventually, you're probably going to want to get them, but not quite yet if you're just beginning.
